Tilt Observations at the Seafloor by Mobile Ocean Bottom Seismometers

چکیده
We have developed a broadband ocean bottom seismometer (BBOBS) and its new generation (BBOBS-NX) with the penetrator sensor system since 1999. With them, we performed many practical observations to create research category of seismology. As next step in seafloor geophysical observation, BBOBS BBOBS-NX can be breakthrough realizing geodetic observation network on seafloor. Although vertical displacement by absolute pressure gauge has been widely conducted recent years, other are rarely performed. A few trials measure tilt were performed, but those looked inadequate for observations. Note that our BBOBSs mass position signal output, which used change. horizontal component noise level is good at long period range, expected it adequate measurement. At first evaluation, comparison water-tube tiltmeter. The result was comparable resolution better than 1 µ radian. south Boso Peninsula (KAP3 site) as in-situ study from April, 2013. In January, 2014, slow slip event (SSE) occurred near this site. data processed removing steps, mechanical relaxation, tides. results show clear peak started late December Two more 2 year-long began 2015: one KAP3 site another off Miyagi Prefecture slope Japan Trench. latter recovered 2017 about 1.5 years data, indicate large continuous up several tens This amount explained similar already estimated SSE. Mobile measurement powerful tool SSEs, they located above source area also possible build an array because low cost ease deployment compared borehole

Time Drift of Ocean Bottom Seismometers (obs)
During the past decades, Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) have played a key role in permanent seismic activity monitoring at sea as well as allowing a better understating of the earth interior. Data collected by the instrument can provide information on the ocean bottom sub-layers down to a depth of 40 km beneath the ocean floor. The accuracy of the results directly depends on the time drift of ...

متن کاملDetermining the orientations of ocean bottom seismometers using ambient noise correlation
[1] The cross-correlation of multicomponent ambient seismic noise can reveal both the velocity and polarization of surface waves propagating between pairs of stations. We explore this property to develop a novel method for determining the horizontal orientation of ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) by analyzing the polarization of Rayleigh waves retrieved from ambient noise crosscorrelation. We de...
متن کاملObservations of infragravity waves at the Monterey ocean bottom broadband station (MOBB)
[1] Infragravity waves can be observed at the 1000 m deep ocean bottom broadband seismic station MOBB on stormy as well as quiet days. When compared to the energy of the short-period ocean waves recorded at the local buoys, infragravity waves in the longer than 20 s period band are found to be mainly locally generated from shorter-period waves. Two types of modulation of the infragravity signal...
متن کاملGlobal Observations of Ocean-Bottom Subinertial Current Dissipation
Quadratic bottom boundary layer drag is a potentially significant source of energy dissipation in the deep ocean. This study presents a new estimate of the energy dissipated by this process, using results from the world’s largest archive of ocean current meter time series and focusing strongly upon the potential uncertainties in this calculation. Two methods are used, one based on a simple divi...
